Renewable Energy penetration: the upcoming challenges for TSOs
40.8% of the overall electricity demand was supplied on real time basis by wind power some days ago in the Spanish electricity system. This record constitutes a real challenge for transmission system operators (TSOs).
In more general terms, renewable energy penetration strongly depends on the ability of TSO to evolve towards a new way of operating the system: dedicated predictability for renewable generation, voltage dip management and managing the power balance.
The big issue for the coming years (especially taking into account the targets set by the EU Directive on the use of energy from renewable sources) is balancing the transmission system in the presence of high renewable power penetration. This not only requires to redesign grid codes, but also a deep revision of power reserve policy. Along with renewable sources growth, a market for upgraded reserves is becoming necessary.
This paper shows some good practices from the Spanish TSO, REE, leading to better integration of renewable generation: commissioning a dedicated centre for renewable energy management, grid code evolution, development of specific applications to maximize renewable generation and provide production limits to each renewable energy plant, voltage control and congestion management.

Renewable Energy Source - Introduction
The future of energy resources lies in renewable energy.
Renewable energy sources:
- Wind - Wind have been used for centuries as a source for energy. Wind mills were used all over the world centuries ago.
- Solar - The sun provides endless energy in the form of sun rays. Special technology (photo voltaic cells) can convert the sun’s energy to electricity.
- Geothermic energy - already used in many places around the globe, geothermic energy can be harnessed to produce electricity.
There are many reasons why renewable energy will dominate the future :
- Endless sources - renewable energy sources are being constantly re-generated.
- Clean - transferring these naturally occurring energy sources to energy forms consumable by us (e.g. electricity) does not harm the environment.
- Freely available - current energy sources are difficult to trace and process. Large amounts of money and expertise are required to take part in the energy markets. Regular people act only as consumers in that market. Some renewable energy sources are easily accessible and as technology progress, the means to become your own supplier of energy will be available.

What Do The Presidential Candidates Think of Solar Energy? Mike Huckabee
Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee is hanging in there. So what’s his position on solar energy?
Mike Huckabee’s stance on environmental policy centers solely on energy independence. From his point of view, energy independence is a vehicle toward national security. He supports activities that promote energy independence: solar power, nuclear power, “clean coal,” natural gas, and biofuels.
Unlike McCain, Huckabee does not necessarily believe global warming is the result of human activity. Instead Huckabee is motivated to protect the earth for religious reasons. In a MSNBC hosted Republican debate in 2007, Huckabee expressed his view on how the environment relates to global warming, “our responsibility to God means to be good stewards of this earth, be good caretakers of the natural resources that don’t belong to us we just get to use them, we have no right to abuse them.” (Check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ep0DGbrwdzw if you’re interested in hearing Huckabee’s view firsthand.)
Huckabee’s campaign website is light on specifics on how he will achieve his plans toward energy independence. He does, however, set forth a bold plan: “The first thing I will do as President is send Congress my comprehensive plan for energy independence. I’ll use the bully pulpit to inform you about the plan and ask for your support . . . The plan will get underway during my first term, and we will achieve energy independence by the end of my second term.”

U.S. has more sun but Europe has more solar power…for now

A new study of the Concentrated Solar Power industry shows Europe to be far ahead, with major growth in the U.S. a couple years away. Emerging Energy Research found several reasons for the growth on Concenrtated Solar Power…but first a brief explanation. CSP uses reflectors to focus the sun’s energy, like using […]

Greens delighted electricity feed-in scheme becomes law (Australia)
The SA Government’s solar panel ‘feed-in’ Bill has passed both Houses of Parliament tonight, with crucial Greens’ amendments. The Electricity (Feed-in Scheme - Residential Solar Systems) Amendment bill encourages the uptake of solar electricity by allowing residents to sell their solar electricity at a higher rate than they are charged.
“We’re absolutely delighted this Bill has passed, and we’re delighted the Government has accepted our amendments. This is going to make a real positive difference to the uptake of solar panels in South Australia,” Mark Parnell said.
The Bill debate turned into a showdown over the length of the scheme. The Government proposed only 5 years. The Upper House continued to support the Greens’ amendment to extend the life of the scheme to 20 years, in line with industry wishes.
“This is a great result. The Government’s Bill now has some real teeth. The 20 year time frame will provide the guaranteed long term security that the solar industry is after,” he said.
The other amendment which passed has extended the scheme to other small electricity users, such as churches, schools and businesses.
“Credit where credit is due: the Greens’ amendment originally passed by the Upper House extended the scheme to small business. The Government has gone once step further, which we fully support.
“It’s great that the Government has accepted the wisdom of our amendments, and we look forward to this Bill helping to drive a ‘green collar industry’ in South Australia,” he said.

Sugar cane scrap into renewable energy

Instead of burning sugar cane scrap (the traditional method), the scrap will instead be used as fuel to create electricity in Australia.
Sure, it will still be burned and carbon will be emitted. But the burning will be much more efficient and less carbon will escape. Plus, petroleum-based products won’t be used, and just producing and trucking them in has a huge carbon footprint in and of itself.
Using locally produced fuelstock to create electricity looks to be a major coming trend.

Federal budget cuts incentives for alternative energy.
The President’s new budget just came out and it couldn’t be more unfriendly towards the environment in general unless they go that extra mile and put in special tax breaks on the purchase of clubs for the express purpose of baby seal hunting.

Fuel from Trash
Great story on Talk of the Nation today concerning Ethanol from biomass and municipal solid waste (e.g. TRASH).
Anyone with a grasp on corn based Ethanol knows that there is not enough arable land in the country to make a sizable dent in our fuel consumption. On top of that fact is that we’d be using FOOD to convert to fuel…not a sustainable effort causing a wide ripple effect across the globe. The thought of converting trash into fuel is not just fantasy from Hollywood anymore.
This is the next generation of Ethanol. Converting biomass and municipal solid waste with the use of microorganisms to break these down could not only reduce our waste but provide cheap Ethanol at under $1/gallon. This is according to Coskata..the leader of this technology..and they’ve been signed on by General Motors to push this technology forward with GM’s commitment to have 50% of their cars running on flex-fuel.
I can’t help but think of Mr. Fusion..
