Brazil to Become Major Oil Producer
Brazil is expected to become a major oil producer whose production will become increasingly important to the United States over the next decade.
Petrobras, Brazil’s top oil exploration and oil and gas production company, announced in November, 2007 that it had made a major discovery some 300Km off the Brazilian coast off the Rio de Janeiro State coast. The Tupi field discovery is equivalent to the world’s most important ones and probably the most significant new field discovery in the past thirty years.
Only about two weeks after the Tupi field discovery Petrobras announced another large discovery of the natural gas and condensate field in the area called Jupiter. There are distinct similarities between the Tupi and Jupiter dimensions. “This new field’s geological structure indicates an area of 1,200 square kilometers, similar to Tupi’s.” The pioneer well, 1-BRSA-559-RJS (1-RJS-652), called Jupiter, is nestled at a final depth of 5,252 meters, 290 km off the Rio de Janeiro State coast, and 37 km from the Tupi area, at a water depth of 2,187 m.
While both of these discoveries are at a tremendous depth they are expected to produce superior light sweet crude oil that will demand a premium price on the world market which will help offset the cost of production. Petrobras leads the world in deep oil field production technologies.
The discovery and planned production from these two enormous fields by 2010 to 2011 will likely change the relationship between the US and Brazil to a considerable degree. Brazil will likely emerge as one of the world’s premier oil and gas producers and have surplus oil to export in large amounts.
This will enrich Brazil as a nation and bodes well for investments in Brazil and in the Real, the Brazilian currency. As for the US it will have to look at Brazil in an entirely new way should it become heavily dependent upon importing Brazilian oil and gas. The new relationship that will be forged between Brazil and the US may well make the US far less dependant upon oil from the Middle East.
Should that occur you might imagine that the US relationship with Saudi Arabia will under go significant changes as well. Hopefully the US would no longer have to look the other way and ignore the repressive nature of the Saudi government.
One thing is for certain as the 21st century moves forward. Those nations that have surplus oil are going to prosper and those who depend upon importing large amounts of oil are going to suffer.

Wind Jumps 45% - PTC Still Not Renewed
Good news in the wind power sector - installed wind power capacity jumped 45 percent in 2007. That shatters all previous records, according to the American Wind Energy Association.
The looming problem, though, is that the production tax credit (PTC) for wind still hasn’t been renewed. It’s set to expire at the end of this year and it directly effects the health of the wind power industry. The PTC is not permanent and must continuously be renewed - that’s not good business for wind power folks, though. Wind projects tend to stall several months ahead of the PTC expiration date; an uncertain regulatory climate causes nervousness in developers.

Intel Purchases a Huge Amount of Renewable Energy Certificates
Intel announced today that it has purchased the equivalent of “1.3 billion kilowatt hours of energy a year. The EPA estimates this has the equivalent effect of eliminating CO2 emissions for more than 185,000 automobiles or the electricity needed to power more than 130,000 average American homes annually.” Although this is …

BIODIESEL ROYAL ENFIELD BULLETS
Ever since I posted on the Coskata ethanol production method and how it could lead to a new generation of E85 powered bikes, and the military diesel Kawasakis (M1030M1s at the USMC Combat Motorcycle School), I’ve been thinking of alternative fuels for motorcycles. This morning I googled “BioDiesel Motorcycle” and found this really cool article at Kneeslider. Apparently it’s a bike built by Colorado Biodiesel© and MotorEarth© to promote diesel use and was then auctioned on Ebay. Paul Crowe at Kneeslider reported on this amazing bike.
Paul later followed up with an article on Royal Enfield Bullet biodiesel conversion by Charles Altmann. Altmann Machines in Germany takes the original Royal Enfield Bullet engine out and replaces it with a Yanmar 406cc, single cylinder, direct injection diesel engine.
So with fears of oil becoming scarce, more and more people are saying they would downgrade to smaller cars. Perhaps one day as fuel prices go higher and higher they may even downgrade to two-wheelers. The next step? Alternative fuel bikes. They’re already here.
NIST Set To Test Hydrogen Pipelines
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has started construction on a new laboratory to evaluate tests, materials, mechanical properties and standards for Hydrogen pipelines. The 750 sq ft laboratory, expected to be operational by mid-2008, will sit on the site of a former Hydrogen test facility at the NIST campus in Boulder, Colo.
Since long-term exposure to Hydrogen can embrittle existing pipelines and increase the potential for dangerous failures, researchers will be using hydraulic machines to test mechanical fatigue, residual strength and fracture toughness of various pipeline materials and equipment.
Some of the experiments will involve immersing pipeline materials in pressurized Hydrogen gas contained in steel alloy test chambers. NIST is coordinating its research and safety plans with other national laboratories and industry groups working with Hydrogen. In the future, the focus will expand to new pipeline materials such as composites.

Giuliani and McCain say no to GHG cap
Rudy Giuliani and John McCain both agreed setting mandatory caps on greenhouse gas emissions would have a stifling effect on the economy. While McCain suggested a “cap and trade” system that wouldn’t necessarily decrease CO2 emissions, both candidates pledged to expand the use of nuclear energy at Thursday night’s Republican debate.
Giuliani: “We haven’t licensed a nuclear power plant in 30 years. France is 80 percent nuclear; we’re 20 percent nuclear; we’re going down to 15 percent nuclear. We have to crack through there.”
McCain: “I am confident American technology and the embrace of green technologies, many of the things that Rudy just talked about, and nuclear power being one of them, we can reduce these greenhouse gas emissions.”
Giuliani said he also supports clean coal technology such as carbon sequestration, as well as a cocktail of other alternative energy technologies like wind, hydro, biofuels, and hybrid vehicles. McCain emphasized the importance of making global energy agreements with rapidly developing countries like China and India. Read why the group Climate Progress calls McCain’s promises “double-talk.”

Japan to spend $40 Billion to combat climate change
Bloomberg reports that Japanese PM Fukuda has announced plans to take the lead in developing alternative energy and controlling emissions:
“Over the next five years, Japan will spend $30 billion on new environmental technology at home and provide another $10 billion for developing countries, Fukuda said in a speech today at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Fukuda also proposed a 30 percent improvement in energy efficiency globally by 2020.”
