Fuel from Trash

Great story on Talk of the Nation today concerning Ethanol from biomass and municipal solid waste (e.g. TRASH).

Anyone with a grasp on corn based Ethanol knows that there is not enough arable land in the country to make a sizable dent in our fuel consumption. On top of that fact is that we’d be using FOOD to convert to fuel…not a sustainable effort causing a wide ripple effect across the globe. The thought of converting trash into fuel is not just fantasy from Hollywood anymore.

This is the next generation of Ethanol. Converting biomass and municipal solid waste with the use of microorganisms to break these down could not only reduce our waste but provide cheap Ethanol at under $1/gallon. This is according to Coskata..the leader of this technology..and they’ve been signed on by General Motors to push this technology forward with GM’s commitment to have 50% of their cars running on flex-fuel.

I can’t help but think of Mr. Fusion.. mr-fusion.jpg
